Maths magic

Room 3 maths group had a great time today using 6 of the 18 new laptops we have purchased and our pod of tablets to reinforce our learning. We also selected strategy games and got stuck into our weekly revision tasks, to recap prior learning to keep all aspects of maths alive and fresh in our minds. What a great group of motivated learners they are.

EXPERT WRITERS DESCRIBE THE SEASONS

We have been using descriptive language to write about the seasons. Take a look.

AUTUMN
Crackle! Crackle! I hear the leaves under my feet. They are rustic brown, mouldy yellow, blood red and orange. They are fallen soldiers covering a battlefield. They scatter as I press my foot down. They feel like fur that sticks up reluctantly from an old mat.
The squelchy mud worms around like a slug at top speed. Squelch! In goes my foot. It grabs me like quick sand trying to pull me in to the deep, dark pit below. It oozes away, reluctant to release me. It is dark brown and black like the precious feathers of a kaka.
A golden statue stands bold as brass, further down the leaf, covered lawn. Other statues wait behind it, like dogs waiting for their owners to throw a bone. Meadow green and yellow moss covers them like a deadly disease spreading over their bodies.
Birds tweet harshly, not like the melodious tune they usually sing. They are dawn red and soot black. Their feathers are soft like nylon with beaks hard like plastic.
The trees are bare, just like polished metal. They are wicked old witches screaming with fury. The bark on them is drying out and falling down to the earth.
CHARLOTTE

SUMMER
I look up at the sky. It is a sapphire. The sun is as yellow as a banana and as shiny as a diamond. It’s so bright that you can’t even see it properly.
I look at the trees. They are green. They are waving to me.
I jump into the lake. Splash! I swim quickly to where my brother is. My brother yells “Crocodile!” I swim out of the water and rush to the car.
KALEB

WINTER
I woke up in my cold bed. My arm shot out into warm air around me. I thought it must be a lovely day – but it was the first day of Winter! Slowly I crawled out of bed and slipped on some woolly clothes. As I peeped through my stripy curtains, a stream of light sliced through my room. I couldn’t see anything because the window was covered in frost. I smashed through my door and ran into the cold. I could see the skeleton trees with long bony fingers, ready to attack me – its prey.
SASKIA

AUTUMN
Creek! The trees are groaning like a bunch of Grannies. They wave at n=me as I skip past. They’re like a deep brown like soil from a garden. Their branches are thick and strong.
The leaves slowly float down from the trees, their colours mixing together like paint. They fly in the sky like kites showing off their fiery colours. They are as light as chicken feathers, dancing in the sky like they are doing a performance for the whole world. They crunch under my feet, every step I take.
The clouds are fluffy like sheep. They are dragons flying in the sky. They’re white like whipped cream and are shaped like meringues. The clouds are pretty as flowers.
LUCIE

SUMMER
I run along the beach as my feet sink into the sand. I kick sand up my back. It feels like spiders crawling over my back. The sand is like hot rocks on my feet. It is like my feet are wrapped in a warm blanket.
I jump into the deep blue sea. My feet touch the seaweed on the bottom of the water. It feels like green slime on my small feet.
ZOE

SPRING
After I get up to get into my outside clothes I go outside and look up at the sky. I can see sad clouds and angry clouds. BANG!!!! Goes my neighbours’ water balloon cannon. “Arrr! Arrr!” I shout as I get a fright. I see lots of new born lambs being born rom their mummies in the paddock.
JAKE

SUMMER
The lake is misty in the morning. It ripples like diamonds. I hear a chugging crackling boat. The jet ski sprays sparkling waves. The sky is a Summery blue – as blue as the waves. I see a reflection of the sun on the water. I skim a blunt rock. It ricochets off the water.
JOEL

AUTUMN
The leaves are orange and yellow and as soft as a cloud. The bark is hard and bumpy. It is chocolate brown. The clouds are as soft as a fox as the wind whistles through the trees. The river is freezing cold. It is light blue with frogs on it. A fox creeps up on the frog and pounces. The fox is a soft pillow and orange like a mandarin. The wind is whirling like a rollercoaster and as cold as the Antarctic as it whooshes past my face. A bunny hops by looking for carrots to eat. The wind chases it back to its rabbit hole. All the leaves have fallen off the trees.
ADRIANNA

WINTER
The hard iron tree stares in disbelief at what he has become. It is pointy like a coat hanger, with birds instead of coats and is as bare as a new born chick. The ice climbs up the tree trapping it from the outside world.
There is a man with his face buried in a newspaper sitting on a park bench, who sighs at all the drama happening around him. He wears a long black cloak that huddles around him and a black and white balaclava that makes him look suspicious.
The sky is lonely and dull and is tucking in the sun.
MOLLY

SPRING
It’s a warm sunny day and the burning hot sun is reflecting on the window. The plants are starting to bloom and animals are being born. I can smell the yellow daffodils. They smell like lollies.
I see insects flying around. The butterflies are flying past my face and they’re as brown as chocolate. The grasshoppers are making a song as they jump.
The sky is a sapphire and the grass is an emerald. It is warm and quiet.
ISAAC

SUMMER
Splash goes the water when I dive under on a hot day. Nana calls me to get something out of the car. I run to the car and I drag the canoe out with my sister. We race to an island in it and find a tree house. We wander back to shore. The water is see-through. We find lots of colourful fish.
LINCOLN

AUTUMN
I climb out of my window. I see multi-coloured leaves – yellow, orange, green, sprinting out. Snap! A stick falls out. “Ouch!” If the tree were human that would have hurt like a broken arm. Swish! A beam of light breaks through the clouds and stares down at me. Huge trees are surrounding me like army soldiers “March. March. Hut, two three, four”
Little bunnies and birds chirp and bounce along in the crunchy leaves. The air tickles my nose and the leaves crunch under my feet. The air flows like a river and makes my eyes slowly water down my face. My legs start shivering as they get colder and colder. A little orange fox trots off the path and home to his family.
WILLOW

WINTER
I was in my cold bed. The alarm went off. Time to get up! I got into my warm clothes and jumped onto the computer. Time to go to school. I stepped out. The door was freezing. The frost had covered the grass. I stepped into a frozen puddle. I got into the frozen car.
DAYTON

SPRING
I could see and hear the wildlife literally buzzing around me. Insects buzzed and flew nimbly until they were caught in arachnids’ webs. In ponds I could see frogs bouncing around happily. Overhead birds flew around chirping loudly. The birds’ songs announced that Spring was here. There were tui, kakapo, kea and plovers.
I could feel the wet grass underneath my feet. I walked up to a tree. Its bark was soft. I could see buds and blossom. It seemed to be waving at me.
I could smell flowers swaying in the breeze. The grass was greener than green.
NOAH

WINTER
I am in the pale park. The sky is grey and there are patches of bubbly clouds. The snow on the ground is white like a ghost. The snow is pitch white and shaped like a snowball. The top of the tree has patches of green and white. The bark is brown and bumpy. There is snow on top of glittery rocks. The glitter shimmers at me.
