EARLY SETTLERS JOURNEY TO NEW ZEALAND

We listened to some diary extracts from the Early Settlers to New Zealand, describing thoer journey and life on board ship. We heard about the cramped conditions, leaking boats, storms, widespread illness and sickness, food provisions and how they passed the time. We used this information to make some freeze frame pictures of scenes from the ship. Take a look and see if you can figure out what is happening.

Here we have  2 teenagers who are reading to pass the time, whilst in the foreground Mum cuddles a frightened child as the boat endures the storm, whilst another child lies, feeling sea sick

In this freeze frame Mum sits with her 2 daughters whilst 2 other are cooking food, but feeling sea sick

In this picture, Mr Brown teaches some of the children on the boat, whilst another teacher watches over the children to make sure they are listening. 2 boys are playing cards instead of doing their lesson and another unfortunate passenger, feeling the effects of the storm, falls overboard.

In this freeze frame one passenger is trying to have a shower/wash, whilst 2 others are reading a recipe to make tea, In the foregronnd one child whittles away happily, whilst another is getting cross that her friend is taking so long to finish washing and his food is getting cold.

More descriptions of dragons and magical creatures

We have all been working on using descriptive language and full stops and capital letters in our work. Take a look and see if we have had success.

Dragon
Roar! Roar! What was that? Perry and I went to get our guns. We found a cave so we went inside. We were petrified. We saw a great big dragon. It was sleeping right in front of us. Perry accidentally stood on a twig and it opened its crusty eye. It started to flap his ginormous wings. It went to the village. It had big sharp teeth. Growl! Growl! It had holes in its wings. We ran back to the tent. “Here it comes. Crossbows!” Heaps of arrows hit it and then it fell.

Dragon
Whoosh! Whoosh! A huge green dragon swooped round a helpless, tiny ant that he had chosen over a deer beside it. Each time his wings went down the air the air was like a brick being dropped from the sky. He finally got tired and went down softly and silently. With a twitch of his tail he went to sleep. I walked up to him and felt his bumpy skin. It was a field of bumpy rocks. His huge eyes opened. It gleamed like yellow amber. Then it closed its eyes again. The tree beside it ruffled and it woke up, never to be seen again.
Lucas

Dragon
The dragon is the size of a car. Its skin is scalier than a turtle shell. The dragon has blood dripping from a scar on its left wing. Its claws are sharper than a razor. Its spikes on its back and tail are one metre tall and sharper than a saw. Its teeth are deadly. His grey tummy can fit an elephant in it. He weighs 3.5 tonnes. He can crush a crane.
Perry

Dragon
Creak! I tiptoed up to a sparkly wall. I cried out to myself “I’m rich! I found rubies and gold”
Suddenly red blood shot eyes stared at me. “I think that’s a dragon” I whimpered. It got up and spat out a whole heap of lava in front of me. It was like I’d stepped out on the sun.
The dragon had red and gold scales all over it. Its snow white teeth like skyscrapers, sparkly and pointy. It had a spike on the end of its tail and all over its back.
Alex

Dragon
I saw a cave. I walked in. My brother walked in and asked what I was doing.
I walked in a bit further. I saw a dragon doing target practice. “What the heck” I said. :Why would a red, yellow and green dragon be doing target practice?”
Roar! It blasted and burned me and Vadim straight out of the cave. I fell over when we landed but Vadim didn’t. The dragon’s claws were as sharp as a razor.
Zavannah.

Dragon
Today I am going to the cave. I put my safety hat on. My boots are making a big thump on the dry, dusty dirt. I’m standing outside the cave. The fierce dragon is coming out. I hide behind a bush. He blows out fire. It smells like rotten milk and sweaty socks. It has big thorns on its back. I feel curious and scared. His tail is swinging around and around like the growling sea. It sounds like a bird flying. His teeth are all rusty.

Phoebe

Dragon
The dragon’s scales were as silver as a sword gleaming in the moonlight. It moved like a snake slithering silently through the woods as it tail chopped through the timber. When it moved it looked like a twisted metal tube with wings. Soon it started hovering over the ground. It swooped around like a silver bird in the night sky. Its breath turned to smoke in the night. It aimed its mouth at a tree and it turned to ice.
Noah

Dragon
I walked up to the dragon’s cave. I saw tons upon tons of treasure. I slipped and fell. Bang! I heard a yawn and then I got blown away by a majestic dragon, swooping down on the town citizens. The dragon was dropping candy. This was very unusual and everyone was absolutely gobsmacked! It was Easter early. Everyone was happy and confused about why he was not eating them. Was he a nice dragon? Was he making us fat so he could eat us?

Dragons and other magical creatures

We have been using descriptive language to describe dragons and other magical creatures. Take a look. Titiro!

Dragon
Drip! Drop!......Drip! Drop! The deadly dragon’s cave was a cold wet shadow looming like a robber. It was as dark as a vivid and as stony as a long snaky pathway to a haunted house.
The dragon had a tail as sharp as a rusty old pitch fork. His skin was a jagged jigsaw with heaps of pieces missing. He had a red scaly back with flaky black bumpy bits crouched on top.
His eyes were glowing red fiery rubies staring down fiercely at its prey.
Ella Fraser

Puffball
Puffball is the cutest thing ever. He has a little bow. He is a cloud going through the air. His little legs are very skinny. Whenever he goes past a thing that looks tasty to eat he goes after it. His nose is like a picked bone. He lies in a big dark cave. The cave is like an enormous wet waterfall. His wavy whiskers are like a forest. The only place you can find him is with a cute lady.
Sophie

Dragon
Splutter! Splutter! Went the motor bike as I entered the cave in fear. As I entered the cave I saw that my armour didn’t fit, so I had to change. I entered the cave and saw a hideous looking dragon. He had a scaly back like a stegosaurus that looked like it needed a doctor’s appointment. Instead of an angry dragon and a bad dragon, he was even worse. Flames started to show in his mouth and a burst of fire came out. Then he flew away.
Gracie

The Minotaur
The only place you will find the Minotaur is the deep, dark, dead-animal forest. One day I went looking for the creature. In a cave in the forest there were bones. It was in there and it looked like it was half bull and half goat. Then it bit my head off.
Vadim

Dragon
It was a cold, gloomy night and all the dragons were resting their heads except for the most fierce one – the water dragon. He’s the one that sleeps in the day.
Zoom! Crash! Bang! Ahhh! The dragon swooped past like lightning. His legs were an old, worn out rollercoaster. His wings were lizard skin dipped in the ocean.
As the night turned to the bright sky he tried to get home as fast as he could to check that all his diamonds and treasure were safe.
Adrianna

Dragon
Poof! Fizz! Went the little dragon. It was as big as a strawberry bush. She was as soft as a purple kitten’s fur.
Little puffs of yellow smoke were like the islands of Sobindale, the village that is always brown and crying. Her eyes were as pink as a glittery flamingo. The fur on her wings was having a disco party as she soared as fast as a torpedo crashing down over Sobindale.
Her teeth were as white as paper and her tail as long as a tree in the forest of Sobindale. The trees were hanging down like arrows because of all the pollution. The little dragon was as big as a castle.
Her cave was lime green and humongous, to fit in the dragon and all her toys. She cooked marshmallows with her sky blue lake of acid flames. Her smile was as big as a crescent cheese.
Sophia

Dragon
I tiptoed up to the cave. It was dark like a night with no moon or stars and it was dry and definitely huge.
The dragon had scales as big as a tyre. They were smooth like armour made to fit anything. They were a shiny, newly made coin. It was red and gold like the sun rising into the desert sands.
Jacquie

Dragon
The dragon’s black tail was a spiky trident, poking everything in sight. It was flaky and pitch black like it had been mining coal all day long. He had delicate bat wings tucked up under the shining stolen goods. They had spiders emerging under them attached like sharks. His belly was a red hot raging ball of fire, fizzing and popping under his thick, dark, scaly skin. Suddenly one raging red ruby eye opened and I could smell choking smoke filling the air with his wings going swish as they flew up like a kite. He moved so loudly it sounded like a lightning strike ringing in my ears.

Molly.

MARVELLOUS MEASURING MATHEMATICIANS

In Room 3 maths group we have been exploring using different measuring tools. We used stopwatches to measure the time it took to do various activities, we used trundle wheels to measure how long various distances were, we used cylinders to measure the capacity of different containers to hold liquids and we used balance scales and weights to calculate how heavy things were. It was a lot of fun, but reading the scales was quite tricky.
